Veterans Definitions and Eligibility

Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA)

Qualified Veterans (Definitions from 41 Code of Federal Regulations Part 60-300.)

  • Recently Seperated Veteran: Any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.
     
  • Armed Forces Service Medal Veteran: Any veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12895 (61 FR 1209).
     
  • Disabled Veteran:
    (1) A veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, or  
    (2) A person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.
     
  • Active Duty Wartime or Campaign Badge Veteran: A veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized, under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.  

Oregon Veteran Preference

A Veteran means a person who:

  • Served on active duty with the Armed Forces of the United States:
    • For a period of more than 90 consecutive days beginning on or before January 31, 1955, and was discharged or released under honorable conditions;
    • For a period of more than 178 consecutive days beginning after January 31, 1955, and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions;
    • For 178 days or less and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions because of a service-connected disability;
    • For 178 days or less and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions and has a disability rating from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs; or
    • For at least one day in a combat zone and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions;
  • Received a combat or campaign ribbon of an expeditionary medal for service in the Armed Forces of the United States and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions; or
  • Is receiving a nonservice-connected pension from the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs.

A Disabled Veteran means a person:

  • Who has a disability rating from the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs;
  • Whose discharge or release from active duty was for a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, or
  • Who was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.
